Esposizione delle Sacre Cerimonie; Giuseppe Baldeschi

Esposizione delle Sacre Cerimonie
Per le Funzioni Ordinarie, Straordinaire e Pontificali
Msgr. Giuseppe Baldeschi, CM
6th edition; 1931

An important reference work on ordinary, extraordinary and pontifical functions by a papal master of ceremonies, this book is a revised edition of an rubrical opus that was a liturgical mainstay for over a century.

The name of Giuseppe Baldeschi (1791-1849), is inseparable from the rubrical sphere. An Italian Vincentian and papal master of ceremonies, Msgr. Baldeschi published his first edition of Esposizione delle Sacre Cerimonie (A Summary of the Sacred Ceremonies) in 1823. It immediately became a primary rubrical source for the Roman Rite.

Baldeschi's popular ceremonial manual was quickly translated from Italian and published in several languages. Over the decades it was also repeatedly revised to keep it rubrically current.

Though this is the Italian version, it is noteworthy to mention that the English edition was translated by J.D. Hilarius Dale and published as Ceremonial According to the Roman Rite. It was this former work that served as the catalyst for Fortescue's indispensable classic, The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described.

Esposizione delle Sacre Cerimonie includes chapters on:

  • Instructions for celebrant at private (Low) Mass

  • Instructions for serving a private (Low) Mass (for a pontifical Low Mass with chaplains, for a cardinal or the local ordinary, for a simple priest)

  • Solemn Mass (the clergy in choir, the order of Communion, the master of ceremonies, thurifer, acolytes, subdeacon, deacon and celebrant, when celebrated coram Sanctissimo).

  • Solemn Requiem Mass
Missa Cantata (i.e., High Mass without sacred ministers)

  • Missa Cantata assisted with an MC who is a tonsured cleric, or in sacred orders, or by two tonsured clerics, etc.

  • Instructions for chanted Vespers (the various ministers, etc.)

  • For annual principle functions (Candlemas, Lent, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Tenebrae, Sacred Triduum, Corpus Christi, All Souls, Advent, etc.)

  • Instructions for Pontifical Mass and Vespers at the faldstool.
