Transitus of St. Francis

This year is the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, the Little Poverello, who died near the Portiuncula chapel on October 3, 1226.

The Franciscan Order commemorates the passing of their holy father into heaven with a ceremony called the Transitus Sancti Patris Nostri Francisi which has been included in our NOVENA TO SAINT FRANCIS devotional booklet.

In honor of the Year of St. Francis, we offer as page extracts from our Novena booklet the traditional Transitus rite (see the side bar) or download as a PDF.

You can also hear and learn the chants with this videos shown below.

Firstly, the O Sanctissima Anima chant.

Secondly, a chorale version of O Sanctissima Anima by Lorenzo Perosi (1872-1956).

Thirdly, the Salve Sancte Pater chant with responsory and oration.

Also, see our YEAR OF ST. FRANCIS page for more Franciscan Offerings available from Romanitas Press.

Note

1 There is a typo in the printed and PDF editions which indicates the date of the Transitus as October 4, but it is October 3.
